Our Lady of Hope Parish Religious Education for Grades 1-8

Our Lady of Hope Parish offers many spiritual and educational opportunities for parish families with children. The parish religious education program, in two locations - New Hartford and Harwinton - encourages curiosity about God and the Catholic Church through study, faith sharing and activities. 

The Religious Education Coordinators, Teresa Lovejoy (New Hartford) and Christine Rousseau (Harwinton) welcome registration inquiries for the 2018-2019 year from families who have recently joined the parish.

IHOM Church - Monthly Religious Education Gatherings:

Religious education at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Harwinton consists of monthly grade-level large group gatherings from September through April for children in grades 1-8.  Discussions and activities take place within small groups of parents and children.  A textbook is given to each child enrolled in the religious education program.

GRADES 1-5 Children in Grades 1-4 meet once a month on a Thursday evening from 5:45-7:00 PM. Children in Grade 5 meet once a month on a Wednesday evening from 5:45-7:00 PM. Children in        Grades 1-5 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, an adult relative, or an adult family friend         to attend the Gatherings.

GRADES 6-8 Children in Grades 6-8 meet once a month on a Wednesday evening from 6:45-8:15 PM. Parents of children in Grades 6-8 are encouraged to attend all the gatherings with their child and to participate in the discussions and activities.

The monthly gathering schedules may vary due to school vacations, holy days and holidays.  Gathering schedules for each grade are mailed to families in August.

Grade 2 - 2nd Thursday of the month
Grade 3 - 3rd Thursday of the month
Grade 4 - 4th Thursday of the month
Grade 5 - 1st Wednesday of the month
Grade 6 - 2nd Wednesday of the month
Grade 7 - 3rd Wednesday of the month
Grade 8 - 4th Wednesday of the month



Children in Grades 1-8 complete weekly assignments at home in their textbooks to prepare for the monthly gatherings.  Textbook assignments are reviewed and collected at the monthly gatherings.  Students are expected to complete and turn in all textbook assignments by March.  The textbooks and the weekly assignment schedules are given to students at the first gathering in September.

Sacrament Preparation for Baptized Children

The parish community welcomes children who desire to receive God's grace in the sacraments. Families with children should faithfully attend weekly Mass with the parish community and participate in the life of the parish community. Sacrament preparation parent/child meetings are held in addition to the monthly religious education Gatherings.

First Reconciliation (Confession): Baptized children in Grades 2 and up, who faithfully attend Mass and have completed one year of study in 2016 -2107 in a parish religious education program or a Catholic school, may be ready to enter the First Reconciliation preparation process. 

First Eucharist (Communion): Baptized children in Grades 3 and up, who faithfully attend Mass and have completed the preparation process for the sacrament of Reconciliation, may be ready to enter the First Eucharist preparation process.

Confirmation for High School Parishioners: Our Lady of Hope Parish youth in high school (Grades 9-12), who faithfully attend Mass, may be ready to enter the Confirmation preparation process.
